Riding for Kindness: A Positive Activity™ Cycle Against Suicide in Memory of Bob
Today, I’m fueled by gratitude, connection, and a deep sense of purpose. This morning at 6:30 a.m., Bob’s family gathered to send me off spirit lifted, heart full, and ready. Twelve hours later, at 6:30 p.m., I pedaled back to the boat, exhausted yet elated. That’s the beautiful power of living a Positive Activity™: choosing actions that generate optimism, kindness, and productivity.
This ride wasn’t just a physical journey it was a cycle of kindness. The Cycle Against Suicide, in memory of my friend Bob and countless others, became a conscious act of kindness. That’s a cornerstone of Positive Activity™: when we mindfully choose to act with compassion, we create ripples of positivity we may never fully see.
The truth is sobering. Suicide claims more than 700,000 lives worldwide each year, according to the World Health Organization. In the United States, nearly 50,000 people die by suicide annually about one every 11 minutes. Even more difficult is the fact that suicidal thoughts are often invisible. Many people struggle silently, which is why kindness is so essential: we simply do not know what someone else may be going through.
The night before the ride, my training partners and fellow cyclists gathered for a “pasta fest.” On the surface, it was just a pre-ride dinner. But in reality, it was Positive Activity™ at work: fueling our bodies, sharing laughter, lifting each other up with encouragement. That sense of community became as important as the miles we would pedal the next day.
When I mounted my bike in the morning, I carried all that kindness with me the send-off smiles, the supportive hugs, the quiet strength of Bob’s family. Every pedal stroke was a conscious decision to push forward, not just for myself, but as an act of solidarity with those still fighting unseen battles. Positive Activity™ teaches us that when we focus on small, deliberate choices like being kind, showing up, or supporting a friend we build momentum toward positivity and resilience.
During the ride, I thought of Bob not with sorrow, but with gratitude. His laughter, his presence, his light. Positive Activity™ isn’t about ignoring pain or pretending challenges don’t exist; it’s about recognizing them, then shifting toward actions that honor life, bring connection, and foster hope.
At the finish, I felt a glow that had nothing to do with distance or speed. It came from the collective energy of kindness, community, and purpose. The ride was proof that positivity wins, that kindness matters, and that choosing a Positive Activity™ whether cycling, supporting a cause, or simply reaching out to someone, creates a brighter, more compassionate world.
So ride, speak, smile, uplift. Let your act whatever form it takes be a Positive Activity™ that shines for someone in need. Because kindness wins. Always.
