Positive Activity… in a Sling

This morning, I stopped into Narrative at Mercato in Naples for my usual decaf. The young woman who took my order was pleasant, upbeat, and incredibly accommodating. She greeted me warmly and made the simple act of ordering coffee feel like a genuine interaction. Then I noticed something. Her right arm was in a sling. Not just any sling, either, the kind used for a shoulder injury.

I recognized it immediately because my sister-in-law had the same type. Shoulder injuries can be extremely painful. Yet you would never know it by the way she carried herself. She was cheerful, engaged, and professional. No complaints, no “poor me.” Just doing her job and making customers feel welcome. Her name was Viv.

She mentioned that this wasn’t even her first shoulder issue, which means she knows exactly what kind of recovery she’s facing. And still… she showed up with a great attitude. That alone would have been a Positive Activity moment worth sharing, but the story didn’t end there.

Standing in front of me at Narrative were two young ladies who struck me as equally pleasant and positive. A few minutes later, I walked over to Pure Green, and there they were again, this time behind the counter. Their names were Olivia and Nina, and they work at Pure Green.

We started chatting, and I asked them if they had noticed Viv working with her arm in a sling. They smiled immediately, “Yes,” they said, “She’s amazing.” They also told me something else. They’re all friends. Viv, Olivia, and Nina are high school sophomores with college aspirations.

As we spoke for a few minutes, I noticed something interesting. Olivia and Nina had the exact same upbeat, helpful, positive energy as Viv, which reminded me of an old saying:

Birds of a feather flock together.

Positive people tend to find one another. The three of them clearly support each other, and it shows in the way they treat the people around them. Moments like this remind me of something I’ve said for years in BarTips and through Positive Activity:

Attitude… well… it is everything.

Not because life is always easy, but because attitude is a choice. Viv showed up to work with a painful shoulder and a smile. Olivia and Nina reflected that same spirit. Three young people already demonstrating the kind of outlook and professionalism that will serve them well wherever life takes them.

And it all started with a simple cup of decaf.
